George Lange’s passion for cars goes all the way back to childhood when, like most enthusiasts, he loved to play with toy cars. George was a Matchbox collector and stepping into his private garage in St. Louis, MO, it’s obvious that he never grew out of collecting cars.
What a garage it is. George holds the enviable distinction of having the largest personal collection of Alloway hot rods. We’ve met
Bobby Alloway and seen his work close up. Bobby is a Ridler Award winner and a perfectionist who applies his craftsmanship down to the smallest details. Most of us can only dream of owning an Alloway car but George has had ten of them. We counted five just in the garage we visited. He had a few more in another garage across town.
George isn’t just a hot rod lover, though. His collection includes hot rods, muscle cars, a beautiful all-original 1960s Corvette and a few high-end sports cars for good measure. There was even a tiny MINI Cooper that looked like a toy next to the ZR1 Corvette. George explained that he loved all kinds of cars, “as long as they’re fun to drive.”
With the keys to a gazillion dollars’ worth of cars at the ready, George has fun-to-drive covered. But since he has a Porsche GT3 and a Ferrari at his disposal, we were a little surprised to learn George prefers driving his Volkswagen R32. We know the R32 is a lot of car for the money, but the guy has Ferraris! George explained that his VW has all the GO he can enjoy on an everyday basis. “The VW is fun at any speed,” he told us. “To have fun in the Ferrari, you need to be going over 100 mph.” And you can’t do that running to the grocery store.
