Tuner shops are rarely all business. Modifying customers’ cars pays the bills, but shops are also social hubs where local gearheads come together – even when they don’t have a project in the works.
Drivers Image in Skokie, IL, outside of Chicago, is no different. Owner Gregg Feinstein says that’s okay by him, since there’s nothing he likes more than hanging out and talking cars.
The night the Nation of GO Tour came by, we found people enjoying pizza and showing off their rides out in front of the shop. We met members of a new club,
Underdog Performance, and checked out their cars.
Underdog Performance was apparently formed out of a “bad breakup” with another club and their new ideology was to be more inclusive. They had some VW guys, but said everyone was welcome.
“Everyone welcome” seemed to be the attitude overall at Drivers Image. We saw a ’52 Ford hot rod next to a turbo-charged Hyundai out front. Inside the showroom Drivers Image displayed their showpiece Honda S2000, and back in the garage was Gregg’s personal Subaru. It’s an ’05 WRX STi that has been seriously tweaked to produce power in the mid-400 hp range on pump gas – and over 500 hp on racing gas. The centerpiece under the hood is a custom intake designed and fabricated by friend of the shop and part-time employee Vincent Fiore. He calls it a “Tarantula manifold” and it’s functional as well as good looking in the engine bay.
The Nation of GO Tour was glad to meet some of the Chicago area’s real enthusiasts and introduce them to the
Nation of GO. We even took advantage of the darkness to project our video presentation onto the exterior wall of the shop. With all the people who came out, it would have been tough crowding in around the S2000 anyway.
