Vans a-rockin’

Nov 06, 2009

The Nation of GO Tour stop at Quigley Motor Company was bittersweet for the Tour crew. We were sad knowing that we’d soon be sending our trusted 4X4 van back home. But while we were there, owner Mike Quigley and his friends took us out for some four-wheeling fun in, among others, a conversion van that still had curtains in the windows. That was pretty sweet.

What’s in a name?

Nov 05, 2009

Growing up the son of a florist, hot rod builder Ken Fenical earned his nickname early. Back then kids started calling him Posies and the name stuck. “It’s P-O-S-I-E-S,” he explained, “no possession. Or possession after the s.” He wants to be clear that it’s not Posie or Posie’s, it’s Posies of Posies Rods & Customs. And that’s exactly how it reads in the guidebook for the 2009 Posies Driven Dirty Tour.

Letting you in on a secret

Nov 03, 2009

Honda Research & Development has a vast facility in northern Ohio that’s used to test vehicle dynamics and reliability. Besides testing its own vehicles, Honda also offers the facility to other manufacturers, so you may see things there that aren’t yet meant for public consumption. Your phone’s camera will be taped over before you go in. And anything your cameraman shoots is reviewed before you can leave. With all the secrecy, you can be forgiven if you haven’t heard a lot about Team Honda Research.

Chicago Nightspot

Tuner shops are rarely all business. Modifying customers’ cars pays the bills, but shops are also social hubs where local gearheads come together – even when they don’t have a project in the works. Drivers Image in Skokie, IL, outside of Chicago, is no different. Owner Gregg Feinstein says that’s okay by him, since there’s nothing he likes more than hanging out and talking cars.

Words Can’t Describe

Oct 06, 2009

Driving through Illinois, the Nation of GO Tour had to make a stop in Woodstock to see Schwartz Performance owner Jeff Schwartz and his 0-200-0 mph world-record Ultima GTR. Schwartz started by building the Ultima GTR from a kit, and then added a 1000-hp twin-turbo LS-2 engine that he also built himself.

Zero to sixty in just 2 seconds must be something you have to experience. Because the two Tour crew members who got to ride in Jeff’s Ultima couldn’t muster an explanation better than, “Words can’t describe it.”

Show and GO

Oct 06, 2009

In spite of having monster engines, many hot rods will never see a mile on the road. These cars, built entirely for show, are referred to as “trailer queens” and it’s not necessarily a compliment. Troy Trepanier of Rad Rides by Troy in Manteno, IL, has built his share of trailer queens.

That doesn’t mean Troy isn’t into going fast. It just means he has somehow managed to master both ends of the spectrum. He’s good at show and GO.

Honk If You Love Mustangs

Oct 05, 2009

Located on the service road adjacent to the highway, Gateway Classic Mustang is clearly visible from busy Interstate 44. As soon as our crew opened the van door, we were greeted by a friendly blast of the air horn from a passing trucker. We heard another trucker’s horn soon after. Then a family drove by honking and waving in our direction. Had they all been following the blog?

Turns out, lots of people are fans of the Mustangs that brothers Jason and Lonny Childress create at their shop. The honking was for them and they told us it’s an all-the-time thing.
